Arrow Shower EX: Damage Calculation
Arrow Shower EX is the lv70 EX skill for sniper. I have not played sniper before, but i has received a few request to translate the damage calculation as reported by Half Sugar in his recent investigation (see Ref 1). Do correct me if i have done any mistake or misinterpretation in the translation.
Arrow Shower EX
Strengthen Arrow Shower. Increase casting speed. Left-click to shoot a bunch of arrows instantly and terminate the casting motion.
Lets start with the conclusion of the test:
The additional arrow from Arrow Shower EX2 deals 1950% of damage
(take note of the EX2 here, it will be explained later)
After learning Arrow Shower EX, the original casting animation does not produce more arrow (in fact might be lesser) or additional dmg per arrow.
Pressing left-click while or after casting , will shoot a bunch of additional arrows.
The additional arrows has very large AOE, more focused and can easily deal full damage for all arrows. (see video below)
Based on the video, the casting time for Arrow Shower EX are measured:
Initial Shower: 3.27sec
EX Shots: 1.60 sec
The original casting time for a full arrow shower without tumbling away is 4.87sec.
So indeed, the EX version has sped up the casting animation by ~33%
Interestingly, if you add up the two casting animations of arrow shower ex, you will get the same casting time time as the non-ex arrow shower.
This means that waiting for a full casting animation for Shower EX is exactly the same as the non-EX shower.
Two Types of Damage Calculation
The EX hits of Arrow Shower EX is NOT affected by speed up buff, i.e you will not shoot more arrow/ deal more hits when you are under speed buff.
The EX hits are calculated in two different ways, depending on the timing it is released; we call them EX1 and EX2 here.
When the arrow shower casting animation has not finished, and 'left click' is pressed to trigger the EX part, the dmg is calculated with EX1.
On the other hand, when arrow shower casting animation is finished, and 'left click' is pressed to trigger the EX part, the dmg is calculated with EX2.
In a way, we can see Arrow Shower EX as a form of charging skill; the initial cast animation is considered as a 'charging' process before the release of the more powerful EX2. EX1 is applied when you cancel the 'charging' process half way.
Arrow Shower EX1
Regardless if you trigger this immediately after casting or right before the original casting animation ends, you will get EX1 mode of the skill.
The damage of EX1 is affected by Arrow Shower skill level and dmg increase crest
The damage of EX1 is 1.6 times of the board damage per arrow.
EX1 has 13 arrows, each arrow deals 2 hit, 10% and 150% respectively. Total 26 hits.
(text book definition: board damage = the dmg calculated based on the % and + on the skill description)
The additional damage from EX1 , assuming lv11 arrow shower (55%+220) ; for the ease of calculation , the +220 has been dropped.
Without Crest: 55% * 1.6 * 13 = 1144%
With Crest : 55% * 1.2 * 1.6 * 13 = 1373%
(You may ask at this point, why would the calculations with and without crest are included here. The reason is, EX2 is not affected by crest. Details see next section)
The original arrow shower has 55 arrows under 30% speed-up buff (the number of arrow increases with speed for the original casting animation; fyi, unbuffed =43 arrows).
Therefore the total skill dmg from Arrow Shower under Ex1 mode with 20% dmg crest
= Original Damage + Additional damage from EX1
= 55% * 1.2 (crest) * 55 arrows + 1373% (EX1 with crest)
= 3630% + 1373%
Arrow Shower EX2
If the EX is triggered when the original casting animation of arrow shower is finished, EX2 mode applies.
The damage of EX2 is NOT affected by skill level.
The damage of EX2 is NOT affected by damage increase crest
EX2 has 13 arrows and 13 HITS (the dmg is not split into touch and explosive, unlike EX1)
EX2 damage formula is fixed at 150% x physical attack (take note, it is NOT 1.5x board damage)
13 hits of 150% = 1950% phy attack
In other words, it behaves similarly to the magical breeze shower which give 100% x mag att per arrow after canceling the stance. If you are not familiar with the calculation for magical breeze arrow, see Ref 2-4.
Based on the same calculation as EX1, the dmg between EX1 and EX2 are compared:
EX1: 3630% + 1373% = 5003% (EX1 grants 38% dmg inc)
EX2: 3630% + 1950% = 5580% (EX2 grants 54% dmg inc)
Although it may seems like we are favoring EX1 more with the inclusion of dmg increase crest and assume full hits from original shower, this is actually the closest EX1 mode can get to EX2 mode.
In most cases, you will tend to get lower damage from EX1 mode.
On the other hand, the 54% dmg increase is the lowest amount of damage increase you can get from Arrow Shower EX.
If you don't equip any plate and keep the skill level at lv1, you will get a maximum percentage damage increase since the EX2 would still give you 150% per arrow.
[ take note it is % dmg increase RELATIVE to the original shower, the absolute dmg increase from EX is the same regardless ]
Without speed buff, the % dmg increase is even higher. Based on full hits of 43 hits,
2365% + 1950% = 4315% (EX2 gives 83% dmg inc! ).
Furthermore, you might not get full hits from the original shower but you will most likely to get full 13 hits from the EX2 mode.
In other words, Ex2 mode would give higher percentage dmg increase if your original shower is weaker.
For what used to be a highly unstable skill, Arrow Shower EX basically increases the DPS stability in terms of damage, aoe, hit rate with shorter casting time. It is indeed one of the most underrated EX skill for lv70 cap.
Comparison With Magical Breeze Shower
The mechanics of magical breeze shower is detailed in Ref 2-4 (will not be translated here)
Magical breeze shower: 10 arrows with 100% m.att each
Arrow Shower EX: 13 arrows with 150% p.att each.
The winner is no doubt arrow shower EX.
Sniper can finally harness the full power from Arrow Shower EX instead of letting shower being abused by artillery's magical breeze at lvl 1.
Arrow Shower EX1 = board damage * 1.6 * 13 arrows
Arrow Shower EX2 = phy attack * 150% * 13 arrows
This comparison might not be clear. Let put it in another way.
At lv11, arrow shower board damage is 55%+220, therefore EX1 gives 55%*1.6 = 88% per arrow (+220 additional dmg is ignored for simplicity)
Without 20% dmg inc Crest
Arrow Shower EX1 = phy attack * 88% per arrow
Arrow Shower EX2 = phy attack * 150% per arrow
With 20% dmg inc Crest
Arrow Shower EX1 = phy attack * 106% per arrow
Arrow Shower EX2 = phy attack * 150% per arrow
Both EX1 and EX2 deals 13 times of the above damage because there are 13 arrows for the EX shots.
Therefore, EX2 mode will definitely deal higher damage then EX1 mode. Thus, it is recommended that sniper should try their best not to interrupt the casting of the initial arrow shower to trigger EX2 mode.
Appendix: DPS Analysis
Now, an interesting question comes to my mind.
Would Arrow Shower EX yield higher DPS if i cancel it early?
This question i believe is a practical one since you rarely have the luxury to stand at the same place for 5sec and shoot arrow while the boss awes before your shower.
Now lets consider the following case:
Phy attack = 20,000
Lv11 Arrow Shower EX = 55% + 220
From cast animation analysis, during the normal showering, the first arrow (out of the 43 arrows) is shot out after 0.93 seconds from the moment you press the skill. Assume 1 arrow is shot a one time, each subsequent arrow will be shot at 0.0543 sec interval.
This is only valid if the arrows are shot one by one. However, even if this is not the case, the trend of the analysis wouldn't deviate very far from the real scenario.
Consider the case where no dmg inc crest is equipped, and without the bow master speed up buff, Sylph's Aid:
Without Sylph's Aid Buff:
Interestingly, if you release EX1 without shooting the usual shower, the DPS is actually the same as when you release EX1 right before the full rain finish (see the red dashed line in the figure above). Of course, if you release EX2, the DPS is much higher.
Would the trend change if you boost your speed with buff?
Now, with a faster casting animation, you are able to shoot 55 arrows (up from 43 arrows) under Sylph's Aid. The first arrow comes out slightly faster, after 0.77sec. Each arrow from the shower would be shot at 0.0455 sec interval. The dmg inc from sylph's aid is ignored for simplicity.
With Sylph's Aid Buff
If you are under sylph's aid buff, the faster arrow showering does increase the efficiency of the skill. After the 25th arrows (i.e. after 1.9sec from the moment you press the skill), the DPS of EX1 with shower exceeds the dps of EX1 without shower.
Adding a 20% dmg increase crest doesn't change the trend much; it simply raises the whole curve and narrows the gap between EX1 and EX2.
EX2 is still superior in all cases, if you have the DPS window to use it.
For DPS maximization, without sylph's aid, you should either release EX1 immediately without shower or get a full shower+ EX2. Standing there showering and cancel it later with EX1 is consider a waste of time, so to speak.
On the other hand, with sylph's aid, you can either release EX1 immediately or release EX1 after 1.9sec at least , or better wait for full shower +EX2. Releasing Ex1 before 1.9sec will cause the DPS to drop, unless you release EX1 without any shower at all.
Last but not least, DPS analysis here talks about DMG/Casting Time, NOT TOTAL DAMAGE. Do not confuse these two distinct concepts.
Total damage of course increase, with higher number of arrow shower shot.
DPS analysis seeks to maximize the small DPS window to deal the maximum possible damage. This is especially important during time acceleration or boss battle where the DPS window is very tight.
